FORTUNE COOKIE PLACEMAT

Supplies Needed:
  • 2 complimentary cotton fabrics
  • Matching Double Fold Bias Tape or enough fabric to create your own (2" x 40")
  • Floriani Heat N Sta Tearaway (if incorporating embroidery)
  • Floriani Double Side Fusible Stitch N Shape
  • Decorative Threads
  • 2 large clear snap
This very creative placemat makes for a fun dinner party! A perfect way to liven up a dull crowd since you get to determine who gets which fortune hidden inside!

  1. Cut a 12 inch circle of 2 different fashion fabrics and a 12 inch circle of Floriani Double Side Fusible Stitch N Shape.

*Tip! Use a charger or oversized plate to trace a perfect circle.

  2. If desired, stitch a design or message with your machine onto the center of one fabric circle using Floriani Heat N Sta Tearaway stabilizer to prevent puckering or distortion. Remove the stabilizer.

  3. Iron this circle onto the Floriani Stitch N Shape circle.

  4. Iron the second piece of fashion fabric onto the back of the Floriani Stitch N Shape circle.

  5. You now have one circular item…the Fortune Cookie. Trim away any excess fabric or frays.

  6. Use decorative threads to free stitch through all 3 layers. Make sure that you use the same color of thread in the bobbin so that the stitching will be the same on both sides! Also remember to stitch at a slow speed.

  7. Attach the bias tape or follow the directions below for creating your own.

    a. Cut a bias strip (2" x 40") of a complimenting or matching fabric to use as the trim along the edge of the circle.

    b. Fold the edges of the strip to the center and press

    c. Encase the edge of the fortune cookie within the bias strip. Pin as you go.

  8. Sew ¼" from the outer edge of the fortune cookie to hold the bias in place.

*The bias will allow you to sew along the curve easily without puckering.

  9. Sew a clear snap at the 12 o'clock position and the other part at the 6 o'clock position on one side.

  10. On the other side of the fortune cookie, sew a clear snap at the 3 o'clock position and the other half of the snap to the 9 o'clock position.

  11. Snap the cookie together with your fortune hidden inside.

  12. With the first set of snaps together, push on the cookie to make it flat (looks like a burrito at this point!) Connect the other two snaps and shape the cookie.

  13. Ding Hao! When you open the cookie up, you can see the message or picture inside!

Be sure to make matching napkins….and don't forget the chopsticks!

This project idea was given to me by a dear friend, Dori Nanry. Dori is an incredibly talented sewer with an extensive industry background. She was an educator for the Babylock sewing machine company for several years as well as a beta tester for many top end embroidery machines and software programs. Her passion is quilting and sharing it with others. Dori and I have worked together for over 15 years teaching and sewing!
Thank you Dori.
